Porn, betting sites, among top 5 most visited sites in Ghana – Cyber Security Authority exposes

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the agency whose mandate is to regulate Cyber Security, in the country has called on Ghanaians to be Cyber-Security conscious amid recent global cyber incidents that have negatively affected individuals, businesses, and other critical information infrastructure.

As part of the Cyber Security Awareness this month under the theme “Regulating Cyber Security; A Public-Private Sector Collaborative Approach”, the Cyber Security Authority of Ghana has announced after their research that, porn and betting sites are two of the most visited sites over the year.

In an interview with the Director General of Cyber Security Authority (Mr Albert Antwi Boasiako), he explained that most Ghanaians negatively spend hours of their time on the internet.

“Visiting the internet is not a problem for me at all. It would have helped us all if we used the internet wisely / profitably. But unfortunately, most of us spend our time viewing pornographic materials, on sites which belong to the foreign communities”.

The Director General continued to explain that, on the average, every Ghanaian spends about 5 hours on the internet.

As of 2012, about 2.3 million Ghanaians had devices which could be used to access the internet. Fast forward to 2022, this number of Ghanaians using the internet has multiplied to about 17 million, with pornography and sports betting sites, swallowing up more than half of these numbers.

Mr Antwi added up more information that, the statistics for countries that spend most time on social media, had Ghana making it 3rd on the list, with Nigeria and Philippines occupying the 1st and 2nd positions respectively.

“In all, we must all take care and be conscious enough when using the internet. We should all use it wisely and profitably. These and many more, are the reasons why the month of October was chosen to create awareness.” he concluded.
