The Government of Ghana has been doing its best to reduce the unemployment rate in the country. Few years ago, the government enrolled more than 600 university graduates on the National Builders Corps programme (NABCO).
Interestingly the NPP government faced some challenges in clearing outstanding allowances for some of the trainees.
The Ministry of Finance later explained that there were arrangements to enroll unemployed graduates on a programme known as “Youstart commercial programme”. What does this Youstart commercial programme mean?
Well, TV3 Ghana has posted the picture of deputy finance minister John Kumah on its heavily followed social media platform.
The deputy financial minister has explained that the new programme has signed on 11 partner banks who would support the Ghanaian youth with loan at reduced rates.
It is not clear if the loans will be targeted at unemployed youth who are yet to start their own businesses.
It is also not clear if the loans will be channelled into already existing businesses owned by the Ghanaian youth.
The deputy finance minister has assured that the government is poised to reduce unemployment through a sustainable and creative means.
Well, would the Youstart commercial programme help the unemployed youth to become a successful employer? Have the unemployed youth been trained to set up businesses? How sustainable is this new scheme?
What happens to the eventual loan defaulter? Would government be ready to easily identify sone loans as bad debts if inexperience causes the Investment into the youth to go bad?
