The Only-Women-Village In Kenya Where Men Are Not Allowed To Visit Or Live In

According to JLP magazine, In Samburu County, Uaso Nyiro is an all-female matriarch community. It was established as a haven for homeless violence survivors and young girls fleeing FGM and early marriages. To keep intruders out, women and their children live in huts shielded by thorny bush.

Over 1,400 Samburu women were raped by British soldiers during and after the colonial period. Because they were afraid that the raped ladies might infect them with STDs, their husbands abandoned them and kicked them out of the house. In 1990, 15 women gathered together to form a community before being joined by others. Even some ladies who have been abandoned by their spouses have found peace and comfort there.

The hamlet has many offspring, but these women have no spouses. Men sneak in at night, when the children are sleeping, and enter the cottages. Some women travel to adjacent villages to spend the night or a few days with their loves before returning. Boys who live with their mothers must leave the village when they reach the age of 18.

For tourists visiting Samburu National Reserve, they provide a school, cultural sites, and a camping facility. To raise money for the community, several of them produce beautiful jewelry that they sell to tourists. They also receive donations from well-wishers all across the world who have learned about the town through the media.
