The mandatory re-registration of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card nationwide, is still ongoing but with many difficulties.
The SIM card re-registration exercise (announced by Ministry of Communications and Digitization-MoCD); which started In October 2021, is a re-registrations of all SIM cards in Ghana, using only the Ghana National Identification card (Ghana Card).
The exercise couldn’t meet its initial deadlines ( 31st March, 2022 and July 31 2022); because of the numerous challenges facing the process.
Many SIM card users were not able to re-register their Sims; mainly because of busy schedules, inability to acquire a Ghana; or very long queues at the SIM card re-registration centers.
In it’s quest to ensure every Ghanaian re-register their SIM cards, the Government, through the Ministry of Communications and Digitization (MoCD), lunched the SIM card Self-Service Application, as an additional means to help Complete Sim card re-registration process.
The SIM card self-Service Application, is currently available on the Google Play Store on any android devices.
The Application, which was released on 25th August, 2022, was intended for SIM users, who have already completed the first Stage of their SIM card registration, to complete the second Stage of the process..
Whereas some Ghanaians applauded the government, for the SIM card self-service app, many also welcomed the introduction of the app, as a ‘job deviation’ or ‘misplaced priority’ on the side of the government.
Some Ghanaians see the SIM card re-registration app as ‘a no need’, because the major problem facing Ghanaians now, with the SIM re-registration, is the difficulties in acquiring the Ghana National Identification card (Ghana Card.
With this, many Ghanaians believed that, since the main document for the SIM re-registration is the Ghana cards, then it would have been better, for the Nana Addo -Bawumia to have developed and lunched an app for the Ghana card registration instead.
Currently, more and more public service institutions in Ghana, have been ordered by the government, to require every citizens to present only Ghana Card for all transactions; first we heard the Central Bank of Ghana, issuing statement, to order all financial institutions in the country, to accept the Ghana card as, the only form of identification for all financial transactions.
Also, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, is also seeking the government to change the laws, to enable the Ghana Card to be use for elections in Ghana.
Again; as we see, the card is currently linked to SIM cards and bank accounts; soon it will be linked to our passports, the births and deaths registry, as well as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority. But as it stands now, there are some problems in acquiring the card.
First, we have all heard and seen, that many citizens who applied for the card, some years ago are yet to received it.
Again; there are very thick queues at the Ghana card registration centers; so thick to the extent, that it become very difficult for many to even start the registration process.
With these few reasons, it would truly have been better; and very useful if the government of Ghana, had developed a Ghana Card self registration App, to help get majority of Ghanaians on board, and also to aid the SIM card re-registration exercise..
