Facebook Blocked In Uganda For 20 Months

Do you know that Facebook has been blocked in Uganda for around 20 months?

The social media platform was blocked during the January 2021 general election after it deleted hundreds of accounts purporting to be controlled by supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement but which were suspected to be fake.

Several attempts to negotiate to unblock Facebook have failed. In what has been perceived as the further stifling of free speech, Parliament passed a computer misuse bill, which has not yet been signed into law.

Human rights activists believe that as the law appears to target opposing online voices, it could be the final blow to internet freedom in Uganda.

What steps ought to have been made by the Ugandan government to ensure that the law strictly adheres to people who misuse the internet while also providing a platform for free speech?

What would have been the reactions in your town if this happened?
