Mahama expects the Akufo-Addo administration to be “more rigorous” in handling the economy.

Former President John Dramani Mahama is confident that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) can manage the economy prudently in the aftermath of stagflation.

According to the National Democratic Congress leader, the country’s economic crisis is the result of the NPP government’s “poor policies.”

This, he claimed, was to blame for the citizens’ disappointment in the Akufo-Addo administration.

The administration is now in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) about a proposal to save the collapsing economy.

According to the Fund’s Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, the agreement between the two parties is expected to be inked before the end of 2022.

However, as a result of the engagement, Mr. Mahama feels that the government has learned its lesson and would be disciplined enough not to allow any additional recessions.

In a statement obtained by AngelOnline.com.gh, he stated that he was optimistic that “after the IMF program, there would be more discipline in the government’s handling of the economy.”

The statement made following his meeting with US Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Virginia E. Palmer, stated that the government’s reform will arouse the people’s expectations and ambitions.

“Confidence will be restored only when people understand that we are on a plan and that the government will not act irresponsibly.”

Mr. Mahama and Madam Palmer discussed, among other things, the increased insecurity in the Subsaharan region, investment in the local economy, and tensions between the Electoral Commission and the NDC party.
