The National Communications Authority under the auspices of the Ministry of the Communications and Digitalization have started implementing punitive measures to telco users who have failed to register their sims with the Ghana card. It can be recalled that there have been various calls by the Ministry headed by Ursula Owusu-Ekuful to get Ghanaians to register their sims. However, many are yet to register as a result of not having their Ghana card or feeling there are other important things to do than going to queue to register.
The minister on July 31 gave out a set of actions to be taken against those who refuse to register their sims. The first of such was the temporary blocking of those sims for some days and restrictions on data usage. However, the blocking of outgoing calls hasn’t only been limited those who haven’t registered. Some users also claim that though they have registered their sims they are still witnessing line blocks.
Sam George, the Ranking Member on the Communications Committee and one of the fiercest critics of the reregistration exercise has created a form to garner the complains of Ghanaians for a law suit. According to the Google form, aggrieved Ghanaians who have been blocked despite registering need to state their complaint, be it relating to the Ghana card or the registration of the Sim.
Interestingly, the form also requests Ghanaians to show their opinion on whether they want to join the law suit against the NCA and Ministry of Communications. With some Ghanaian losing contracts as a result of inability to make calls, concerns are growing that the NCA has overstepped their bounds and need to be cautioned. Sam George seeks to challenge the ministry and bring finality to the issue. Sam George himself is yet to reregister his sim and is seeking the support of other Ghanaians to bring the ministry and NCA to their knees.
Use the link below to fill in the form if you have issues with the registration process or have your line illegally blocked from making calls.
