Another Failed Promise? $993 Million Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam Halted Due To Financial Difficulties

The Government of Ghana, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in November 2019, cut sod for the construction of Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam in the Talensi District in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The project was set to begin in February 2020. 

And was expected to be completed in 50 months time. However, 30 months have passed by, and nothing significant has been done.

There’s no construction work (no physical work) on the site. A resident of the community, according to Joy News’ Report, disclosed that, leaders in charge of the project only came to the there to educate them on the effects and benefits of the dam. 

Lands, which were secured for the project have not been used, and the owners of such lands have still not been compensated.

Meanwhile, Prof. David Millar, the Project Consultant has revealed that “it is impossible to complete in the current economic situation.”

He has therefore advised Government to secure funding externally (i.e loans, partnerships, etc).

According to him, the design of the project was initiated by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. It was then continued by the National Democratic Congress, led by Jerry John Rawlings.

Then, finally in the hands of the New Patriotic Party, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. 

He further argued that the project was not featured in the 2022 budget; hence, it is impossible to proceed with its implementation.
