Mahama ‘Reports’ Akufo-Addo To United States Ambassador To Ghana Over State Of Economy

President Akufo-Addo has been one of the most vilified leaders of the Fourth Republic. Despite the many promises of the president prior to the 2016 elections, many feel that he has underperformed. Some also say he has done his best as any leader would do when compounded with severe internal and external conditions.

One of the biggest critics of Akufo-Addo has been former President John Mahama. Mahama has criticized Akufo-Addo for diverse reasons. This isn’t new because personalities of the opposition normally accuse the incumbent of certain allegations. Akufo-Addo when in opposition did same and now tables have turned with John Mahama throwing shades at the president at the least opportunity.

Former President John Mahama has met with HE Virginia Palmer, the United States Ambassador to Ghana. The two held talks about Ghana-United States relations and the way forward. John Mahama complained of how the Akufo-Addo led government has led the economy into a ditch. He explained that Akufo-Addo ensured the closure of indigenous banks, misappropriated Covid-19 funds and taken certain disastrous decisions regarding the economy.

John Mahama mentioned to the ambassador that he hoped that with the coming of an IMF policy, government will be put in check and the confidence in government restored when the government becomes accountable. Interestingly, this will not be the first time the former president is making such complaints to a diplomat. Same thing happened when John Mahama met the new Hungarian envoy to Ghana. Again Mahama reported to the Commonwealth Parliamentarians the bad handling of the economy by Akufo-Addo.

This is not to say that some of the criticisms of John Mahama are not constructive. Indeed, some of the criticisms have yielded results. It can be recalled that John Mahama was one of the first to call for the government to run to the International Monetary Fund. Government resisted but later listened and went for financial bailout. Again Mahama also criticized the Free SHS and asked for changes within the policy. This is also yielding results as President Akufo-Addo has remarked that the policy will see a review soon.
