We at The Fourth Estate made an RTI request to Prisons Service for the nationalities of people in our prisons. We realized that only two Chinese were in our prisons even though hundreds of them had been arrested for illegal mining.
The prison authorities did not say whether the only two Chinese in our prisons were jailed for illegal mining. They could have been there for something else.
Within the same period, the Chinese were arrested for illegal mining and set free, and hundreds of Ghanaians, Nigerians, and other Africans were arrested in Ghana and jailed. This woman was arrested for sponsoring the massive destruction of our forests.
Your government let her go away while you imprisoned hundreds of your citizens and fellow Africans for milder illegal mining offenses. And you’re justifying this? Sir, things like this rob the black race of the little respect we have. She won’t do this in China and get away with it.
A Ghanaian won’t get away with a tenth of what she did here. She won’t do this in the UK and have the opportunity to re-enter. This is a new low for Ghana.
It is one of the days anyone with a modicum of shame should be ashamed of being a Ghanaian.
