Former Black Stars captain John Mensah has revealed what transpired between him and the center referee when Ghana played Uruguay during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He explains Black Stars players, particularly him, was looking for a goal from that Luis Suarez handball instead of a penalty, but the latter was a legitimate call from the referee.
“It was a difficult moment where everyone wanted a goal. You should let the referee understand every mistake that you do. I rushed to the referee to let him know that it was a penalty. I wanted a goal and not a penalty. We thought it was a goal. But once the referee waved his hands we knew it was a penalty. He told TV3.
The former Sunderland defender indicated the players wanted to make Africa proud based on the support they had from fellow Africans at the first and only World Cup to be hosted in Africa.
“For where we go to, we aimed at making Africa proud. We represented Africa because of the love Nelson Mandela people showed me. In fact Luis Suarez did great disservice to us. At club level in England, they thought I will hurt Suarez. I was given a red card in that game but due to a retrospective action, I was allowed to play the next game.”
