The member of parliament for Builsa South Constituency in the Upper East Region, Honourable Clement Abas Apaak has reacted to the recent statement made by President Akufo Addo on the Free Senior High School education.
In an interview on Okay FM this morning, the law maker made it clear that the president should be applauded for calling for stakeholders meeting on Free SHS. According to him, the president has listened to the cries of Ghanaians and has decided to do the needful. He made it clear that this broader conversation should be made as quick as possible so that the education system will be back on its feet.
Honorable Apaak sees this information as a good news to all stakeholders of the Ghana Education Service. According to him, John Mahama will also see this as a good news because he also called for a broader conversation on it.
‘Let’s clap for the president this morning. What he has said will make all parents, teachers and the school children happy. All former vice chancellors Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang will be happy because of what the president said. All stakeholders will be happy. This is what we have been asking for. The president should call Yaw Adutwum to initiate the processes for the national conversation. This is what John Mahama wanted.”
“The program has come to stay but there have been some problems the feeding of the children, textbooks and their accommodation that must be solved immediately” he stated

This comes after President Akufo-Addo says that there is the need to open a broader conversation on access to education, especially the Free Senior High School policy. He added that the conversation must look at the funding, availability of money, access and other ingredients that must work for the good of the Ghanaian. He made this revelation during his recent meeting with the National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS) executives.
The president has earlier stressed on various platforms that the Free Senior High School policy would not be cancelled despite the current economic crisis in the country. A lot of Ghanaians believe that the free senior education which started in 2017 has caused a lot of financial hardships on the economy.
For this reason, some have suggested that the government should allow parents who can afford the fees pay the fees of their wards. Others suggested that students at boarding houses should pay for the cost of their feeding so that government can take care of other expenditures.
