Facts Check: Mahama Initiated Kumasi International Airport Project; Check Details

There is a seeming tug of war between NDC and NPP over the true ownership of the Kumasi International Airport project.

Earlier, government communication machinery had given an update about the project. According to the Monitoring and Evaluation Secretariat of the government, the phase 2 and 3 of the international airport project in Kumasi started in 2018 as an initiative of Nana Addo government. The statement said it was part of the vision of the president to open up the Ashanti region to the rest of the world. The statement added that the project which is about 98% complete will be commissioned by Nana Addo before 2022 runs out.

But a former minister for communications under John Mahama administration has set the records straight. According to Felix Ofosu Kwakye, Kumasi International Airport is an initiative of John Mahama. He said the project was in 3 phases. Phase one was executed by the previous government. Funds for phase two was secured by the John Mahama government and the project awarded to Contracta before Mahama lost 2016. Ofosu Kwakye said the only portion that can be fully credited to Nana Addo is the phase 3.

Check Felix Ofosu Kwakye’s rejoinder below.

“Disregard any claim that the Kumasi International Airport project is an initiative of President Akufo-Addo.

It is a blatant lie!

The facts around that project are as found below.

The Kumasi International Airport Redevelopment is a three phased project started by President John Mahama.

Phase 1 was completed in 2014 with the construction of a new 1,981 meter runway, provision of Auronuatical Ground Lighting to make night flights possible and modern Instrument Landing Systems.

On 2nd November 2016, President Mahama found and had Parliament approve € 66.35 million($77.977 million) from Banco Santander S. A. of Spain for the Phase 2 comprising a modern, 1 million passenger a year capacity Terminal building with three Airbridges, multiple service facilities and the extension of the runway to 2,300 meters to accommodate larger aircraft.

In April 2019, President Akufo-Addo found and had Parliament approve € 58.9 million (69.6 million) from Deutsche Bank AG London Branch for Phase 3 of the project whose scope of works include the expansion of the terminal building, access roads, car park and a new fire station.

Phases 2 and 3 are being done concurrently because according to the contractor, it would save $4 million.

President Mahama had previously undertaken the $ 274 million, 5 million passenger a year capacity Terminal 3 at the Kotoka International Airport, refurbished Terminal 2 at the same airport, Phase 1 of the Tamale International Airport and the Ho Airport.”We will be waiting for a possible rebuttal from the NPP and we promise to duly keep our followers updated.
