Don’t Pay Them $100,000 – Afriyie Ankrah Tells GFA

With the World Cup fast approaching, players all over the world are looking for enough game time to fully prepare for the world cup. As part of compensations and rewards for players who are able to make the squad, there is an appearance fee paid to each player.

According to former minister for Youth and Sport, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Ghana Football Association must reduce the current budget for appearance fees.

In his time as a minister, the payment of such fees became a big issue for the national team at the World Cup in Brazil. This caused an unrest in the Camp of the Black Stars with many of the players threatening to boycott the last game of the group stages if the payment was not made.

Speaking to the a local radio station, Afriyie Ankrah was of the view that even though the players deserved compensation for playing for the team, the $100,000 was too much. He said “As a country, you need to have a balance between rewarding and compensating your players. I think that this huge appearance fee is a no no, so we have to balance it. You definitely have to give them something, but not such a huge sum of money like $100,000.”

Ghana will face Portugal in the first group game of the tournament in November.
