Ghana is currently undergoing difficult times financially. The government has had to run to the International Monetary fund for financial relief as the economy dips into the ditch. It must have been a difficult decision to take considering the fact that government had resisted all calls from John Mahama led opposition to run to the IMF.
Akufo-Addo and his government have blamed everyone but themselves for the how bad the economy has turned out to be. Bawumia in addressing the nations months ago mentioned that the economy is in tatters because of 4 reasons; two due to external factors and the other two the effects of the erstwhile John Mahama administration. This comment drew a lot of reactions as Ghanaians knew that the NDC left office in a better way as compared to now.
Inflation keeps rising as living conditions get bad. The country has seen excessive strikes and numerous demonstrations from labor unions all agitating for better working conditions. Yet, the government keeps blaming the Ukraine-Russian war for the failure of the economy. Ghana’s inflation for July has now shot to 31.7%. This is higher than the June and May inflation values of 29.8% and 27.6% respectively.
Ghanaians have been reacting to this new July figures. According to many, inflations can rise to over 50% by close of the year. Ghana’s highest inflation was in 2001 when it hit 63.10%. Whereas many blame the government for this, interestingly, some of the reactions to the new July figure seems to be sarcastic with some calling on the government to blame John Mahama for this downfall of the economy. According to the comments if Akufo-Addo and Bawumia choose to blame Mahama for everything then they can equally blame John Mahama who is in opposition for the new inflation values.
