Premier League: The top 10 signings of the summer so far

So far, clubs in the English Premier League have spent more than £698 million on players. This is more than they spent on players in the five previous summer transfer windows combined.

So, when the 2022–2023 season starts this evening, fans can expect to see a lot of new players in the Premier League for the first time or making their professional debuts for their new clubs.

Ian Ladyman of Sportsmail has put together a list of the top 10 transfers so far this summer. Erling Haaland was bought by Manchester City for £51 million, and Raheem Sterling joined Thomas Tuchel’s team.

1. Erling Haaland – £51m goes from Dortmund to Man City

Last season, Manchester City won the Premier League even though they didn’t have a well-known goal scorer. This makes you wonder how far they can go with the 22-year-old now on their team.

After scoring his first goal for City in a preseason friendly against Bayern Munich, Haaland said that he had been watching Pep Guardiola’s team for months and trying to figure out how he could score.

City now has a real through-the-middle striker who is strong, quick, and able to come in and link plays. Impressed? You ought to be.

2. Raheem Sterling – £47.5m from Man City to Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel got a good deal on a proven Premier League forward, but Sterling has to deal with two problems right away.

First of all, this is a step backwards. Chelsea is a big club with a great coach, but they are not City, and Sterling will have to change his mind a lot to play for them.

Second, Chelsea is a team that is changing. Chelsea will look to Sterling to lead them through what could be a tough first few weeks of the season, when some of their players are unhappy and others seem likely to leave. The 27-year-old will either rise to the challenge or not.

3. Darwin Nunez Benfica is going to Liverpool for £64 million

When the Uruguayan scored against Liverpool at home and away in the Champions League in April, not many people thought he would be playing for the FA Cup winners the next season.

Some have said that Nunez could take the place of Sadio Mane, who now plays for Bayern Munich. But things won’t turn out that way. Nunez is a striker who is 6 feet 2 inches tall and should give Jurgen Klopp some new options in the middle. Mo Salah and Luis Diaz will play on the wings for Liverpool.

Nunez will have a lot to prove at Anfield, but Liverpool never seems to buy bad offensive players.

4. Gabriel Jesus from Man City to Arsenal for £45 million

The Brazilian was brought in by City five years ago to replace Sergio Aguero. However, he never quite reached the level needed, which is why his move to Arsenal is so interesting.

Jesus is still only 25 years old, so his best years should be ahead of him. He will be working with a coach, Mikel Arteta, who used to be an assistant manager at City and knows him well.

Maybe Arteta thinks he can get something out of his new player that Pep Guardiola never could. But does Jesus really have the skills to help him and Arsenal reach the next level?

It seems like a lot to ask of a player who has never scored more than 14 goals in a season in the English league.

5. Richarlison from Everton to Tottenham for £60 million

Many people say that Tottenham won the transfer window, but we won’t know for sure until the season starts. What we do know is that they moved quickly and decisively in the market. Richarlison, another Brazilian forward, is the one deal that stands out among the other five or six that the club has made.

The 25-year-old has been in the Premier League for five years and has shown he is good. He is quick and agile, and he knows how to finish moves well. Just one doubt: Richarlison is used to being the best player on his club team, but that won’t be the case at Spurs.

He may not even be on the team, since Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are ahead of him. Richarlison instead of someone else? He’ll like that a lot. Not.

6. Christian Eriksen

Free to go from Brentford to Man United

United has spent most of the summer trying to get Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. This has been one of those horrible, drawn-out transfer sagas. But while all that was going on, they moved to the front of the line to get Eriksen when his short-term contract with Brentford ended.

Given that the London club was the only one to give Eriksen a chance after he had a heart attack at Euro 2020 last year, the most romantic ending would have been for him to stay in west London.

Eriksen is a world-class playmaker who has a lot to offer, and it was smart of United to get him. At this point, it looks like everyone wins.

7. Jesse Lingard

Free to go from Man United to Nottingham Forest

Rarely has one free transfer caused so much fuss. But Lingard seems to be one of those players who can never do anything right in the eyes of the public.

Depending on who you ask, Lingard is either paid too much or his social media posts are too showy. All of these things are wrong. Lingard is a good, dedicated football player who can do well in the right situation, as he did when he played for United, England, and West Ham

Forest, who just got a promotion, were eager to sign him, and the only problem will be if he doesn’t do well. But doesn’t that happen every time someone moves?

8. Nick Pope from Burnley to Newcastle United for £10.4 million

Pope was the first player to leave Turf Moor after Burnley was kicked out of the Premier League, and Newcastle seems like a good place for a talented goalkeeper with a good attitude and something to prove.

With a winter World Cup coming up, Pope will want to get off to a good start for Eddie Howe’s team and put pressure on Jordan Pickford before Gareth Southgate chooses his team.

Also interesting is the fact that Howe chose to buy a goalkeeper. Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka are both more than capable, but Howe wants all of his players to be top-notch, and Pope fits that bill.

It shows where Newcastle thinks they are going.

9. Luis Sinisterra goes from Feyenoord to Leeds United for £22.5 million.

Losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha has been hard for Leeds this summer, but this seems like a good deal for a player who helped his old team get to the European final last year. Sinisterra is a Colombian winger who is 23 years old. He was expected to move to a big club in Spain or Italy this summer.

But Leeds beat everyone else to get him at the beginning of July, and it looks like he will be a key part of Jesse Marsch’s new team at Elland Road. All Leeds needs now is a goal scorer they can count on. Raphinha scored the most goals last season, with 11. He now plays for Barcelona.

10. Julian Alvarez from River Plate to Manchester City for £15.3 million

This deal was done in January of last year, and the 22-year-old striker went back to his parent club right away on loan.

But Alvarez is now a permanent member of City, and his goal in the Community Shield loss to Liverpool got him some attention.

Alvarez is an international player for Argentina. For the last two seasons, he has scored more than one goal every other game in his country’s top league.

He might not start many games early on in his City career, but if modern football is all about having a deep team, City looks to have made a good move here.

It’s not always the big deals that get you where you want to go.
