He Wouldn’t Have Become A Good Lawyer If The Law School Was Restricted Then – Kwesi Pratt

There has been so much brouhaha over certain measures that the General Legal Council has put in place for incoming law students. Last year there was so much talk after 499 students who had passed the law examinations were denied entry. President Akufo-Addo had to intervene before the students were finally admitted.

This year the same thing seems to be happening. However, this time the GLC has placed a number of policies to forestall an agitation among the students. Interestingly, these are very arbitrary. Students are to sign this undertaking before they sit for the exams. Some of the rules state that students cannot request for remarking, request for the marking scheme or even call to see their marked papers.

Many have kicked against this new laws and called on students to boycott the exams. Kwesi Pratt on Good Morning Ghana today, Wednesday, August 3, 2022 had waded into the conversation. Kwesi didn’t spare harsh words for the GLC when he noted that this was like an overthrow of justice. Kwesi pointed out that some of these leaders at the GLC didn’t have to go through harsh training and yet are trying to prevent others from getting there.

The Insight newspaper editor boldly mentioned that President Akufo-Addo who is a lawyer didn’t have to suffer this way to be where he is today. According to Kwesi Pratt, Akufo-Addo could not have become the reputable lawyer he is now if these new measures the GLC had placed were operating then. Kwesi called on the GLC to renounce these polices and allow laxity to the entry of the law school.

It is interesting to know that the Ghana Bar Association is yet to comment on this and have left the students to fight for themselves. The GLC has also resisted all calls to halt their new policy. Interestingly, the GLC has the Chief Justice, Bar President, Attorney General, Dean of the law school in Legon, Deputy AG among other personalities and yet none of them feels this is an infringement on the rights of the students. It is yet to be seen if President Akufo-Addo or the Ghana Bar Association will intervene in this impasse.
