The Big Question: Why Was Ken Ofori Atta Silent On National Cathedral Scandal?

The finance minister was totally silent over the national cathedral scandal during the presentation of the mid year budget in parliament. This was despite the public outcry that preceded the presentation. Many are wondering why Ken Ofori Atta did not speak on the scandal. But Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa seems to have more questions begging for answers.

Check his latest post intercepted by CitizenOne below.

“Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta did not say a word in the Mid Year Review about his unconstitutional withdrawals of some GHS200million from the Consolidated Fund for the infamous National Cathedral project.

He also made absolutely no effort to address the many illegalities and controversies that have dogged the US$400million project which his boss, President Akufo-Addo, describes as his priority of priorities.

How long will government keep running away from accountability and what is the fate of the stalled project after so many structures a diplomatic property, a modern luxury apartment complex, judges’ bungalows, Scholarship Secretariat, Passport Office, Judicial Training Institute and an IT firm have all been demolished with many awaiting compensation?”

The national cathedral project is a multi purpose inter-denominational Christian auditorium with over 5000 sitting capacity. Nana Addo said he promised to build a cathedral to the glory of God should he win the 2016 election. He decided to walk the talk by cutting sod for the project on 6th March 2017.

During his maiden independence day address, the President promised Ghanaians that the project was going to be funded by private individuals in collaboration with the Christian community. He however stated that the state will provide land and technical support. He donated GHC 100,000 as seed money to kick start the national project.

But contrary to the President’s promise, the state released a whooping 21 million dollars to Sir David Adjaye as the design of the project. Another 200 million Ghana Cedis was released from the consolidated fund as additional seed money for the project.

Apart from this, the project has been frosted with many scandals.
