The majority leader Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has disclosed his intention to retire from parliament. This was after he was attacked by his constituents over the weekend.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TV3 monitored by CitizenOne, the Suame MP said haven served the people of Suame for 28 years, he has decided to bow out to allow another person to take over. He said his reign has been a blessing to the constituency because he has built over 50 schools in the 28 years. He however denied that he fears he will lose if he contests again. The MP said he will floor anyone any time.
Kyei Mensah Bonsu disclosed that he didn’t want to contest the previous election as his wife and family had asked him to take a rest. He said he was persuaded by the party to stand again.
“I will take a rest in 2024. But let no one think that I am retiring due to what happened over the weekend. In fact I took this decision with my wife and family last two years. I didn’t want to stand again but the party approached me to stand since I have vast parliamentary experience. And to anyone who think I have been going unopposed, that is far from the truth. In 2012, 2016 and 2020, people contested me but I defeated all of them. If I decide to stand anytime I will win despite what happened.”
It will be recalled that residents of Suame staged a demonstration against their legislator. According to the residents, their MP has failed to use his position to demand for development to the constituency. They said a promise to construct Suame interchange has been in the pipeline for years with no clear sign of reality.
The MP himself visited the constituency to calm down nerves. But his visit turned chaotic as youth in the area attacked him. It was the first time residents were attacking their legislator.
