Time for MMDCEs to be elected in order to make them more responsible in discharging their duties

Three days ago, the member of parliament for Suame constituency Honourable Kyei Mensah Bonsu was attacked by constituents because of abandoned poor roads in the constituency.

In a discusion on this topic on Tv3 new day morning show, the Member of Parliament for Mpraeso constituency, Honourable Davis Ansah Opoku is of the view that, it is time the issue on the election of MMDCEs is keenly considered.

Honourable Davis thinks that, the duties of members of Parliament has been misconstrued. According to him, MMDCEs are the ones responsible for developments in their areas whilst parliamentarians are in charge of laws and policies despite their oversight responsibilities. Parliamentarians however suffers when MMDCEs fail to perform their duties. He believes MMDCEs are reluctant in performing their developmental duties because they are appointed. He thinks if elections are conducted for them and the people are allowed to give them power through the thumb, they will be more responsible in the performance of their duties.

When asked why some members of Parliament gives promises which they can’t fulfill during campaigns, he said the promises are actually on behalf of their presidential candidates. He explained that, during campaigns, presidential candidates can only spend a day in the various constituencies. It is therefore important that, the parliamentary candidate campaign for his or her presidential candidate. They therefore gives promises which their presidential candidates are supposed to give, on behalf of the presidential candidates. The electorates therefore holds them accountable when the executive is unable to fulfill such promises.
