Newly appointed Nigerian head coach, Jose  Peseiro has taken a swipe at the senior national football team, the Black Stars. He says his team has a lot of players playing in the Italian Serie A, English Premier league, German Bundesliga, Fance and in other European top flight leagues. Despite all these promising stars, his team failed to qualify ahead of Ghana to the world cup. He says Ghana qualified by accident.

Ghana played Nigeria in an encounter that was highly competitive for all honours. For a long time, Ghanaians were really impressed by the performance of the team after a shambolic performance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Many attributed the success of this event by the sharp technical brains which were put together by the Ghana Football Association.  Truth be told, the kind of criticism the Football Association faced and were able to overcome it, there should be a big congratulation for them.

Did Ghana really qualify by accident? Looking at the face value, Nigeria had the upper hand at that time. Judging from the point that they had won all their group matches at the AFCON and lost narrowly at the knockout stages. Again, they had sharp attackers, about nine of them who were banging goals for them. They had the supporters in terms of numbers, they had a coach earlier than Ghana did, their venue was ready as against Ghana who was contemplating whether to use Kumasi or Cape Coast. Aside from all these, Nigeria had the chance to qualify in front of their fans in the second leg. No soothsayer or prophet would have prophesied in favour of Ghana. The odds were for Nigeria. The only thing that was for Ghana was the attitude and the ability of the technical to get things right which they did. In Kumasi, Ghana dictated the game plan. In Nigeria, Ghana stopped the tactics of Nigeria, scored the first goal and the one-all draw saw Ghana going to the world cup. Ghana did not qualify by accident. It was a great deal of hard work.

Ghana continues to build her team with friendly matches and Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches. The Portuguese trainer is a nice man and would want to use a good psychological approach to handle his team. He is right because it is part of football.
