Abortion has been touted as one of the most criminal acts for some time.
Ministers in Sierra Leone have taken a big step toward decriminalizing abortion.
This move has been praised by activists and women’s rights organizations.
The President of Sierra Leone,Mr Julius Maada Bio’s cabinet approved a proposed Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill.
In effect, if the Parliament ratifies this bill, abortion will be decriminalized. It’s not the first time this bill will be sent to the president for assent.
Bio’s predecessor backed down seven years ago, following disapproval especially from religious groups. President Bio’s statement comes days after the US Supreme Court moved to overturn protections on abortion rights in the US.
Though legal in some few countries, most countries detaste it. From religion, culture and emotional perspectives, abortion has got it’s own definition.
What is your take on this? What would be the effect in the shortest possible time?
