Most people will agree with me that ninety-nine percent of Black Stars players are foreign based. The moment a local player gets an opportunity to play in a foreign club, he becomes a target for the senior national team and he gains attention. Interestingly, this same player will not get the opportunity because he plays in the local league.

With Ghana qualifying for the world cup, a lot of energy had been channeled into convincing players who were born abroad to play for the nation. There are instances where there had to be an intervention from the president. Wow, isn’t it amazing? In some instances, it goes well and the players are convinced. The questions that I would like to ask are, what aren’t we doing that we will have to convince people in order to represent their nation? What is wrong with the system that produces our local players? What can be done to fix this?

The inclusion of some foreign-born players like Inaki Williams, Yariq Lamptey, Stephan Ambrosius and the others are fantastic. Their impact will be great and probably will shape the game in a certain direction. Everybody will agree that the standard of play at their various clubs is high and competitive. But can we do without them? Well, I will not try to answer this.

As I proceed with this article, I will still ask some questions. What is the essence of announcing a goal king, the best defender, the one who had a good number of assists; in a nutshell, what is the relevance of the statistics that we do in the local league. I have seen several times when certain forwards who have scored 1 goal or two in their entire season abroad play while the leading top scorer in the local league is not even given a call up. In the glorious days of the Black Stars, what were they doing right? I have the answer, the local clubs were doing well both home and in Africa. I have another answer; they were very committed. I have the answer; money was not the priority.

Until such a time that we do our things well, we will keep chasing people who are living their life happily elsewhere by trying to convince them that they are more Ghanaian than those who are born here for them to only play at the world cup. The danger is that, once they fail to choose Ghana because they will have a ‘better’ offer, the national team will suffer what it did in Cameroon. Let us build what we have and those who are born abroad will come and play easily.
