AS Roma has announced that Ghanaian striker Felix Afena-Gyan has signed a new four-year contract with the Serie A club.

The Satdio Olimpico reports that the youthful Black Stars striker has signed a long-term contract that will keep him there until 2026.

After signing the contract, Afena-Gyan said, “My life has changed a lot since I made it into the first team here. I am really happy to have done this.”

“Now all I have to do is focus on getting better, and that is exactly what I intend to do as the new season gets underway.”

General Manager Tiago Pinto believes the new contract would provide the Ghanaian with more room to grow in his role at the club.

With Jose Mourinho as his mentor, “Felix has a tremendous amount of room for improvement,” he stated. “A coach who is important to the development of our young players.”

Our first-team players and academy players have a good relationship, as seen by this contract extension.

During the 2021/22 season, Afena-Gyan scored twice for Jose Mourinho’s team.

He and fellow Ghanaian Kamaldeen Sulemana were recently nominated for the 2022 Golden Boy award.

Barcelona’s Pedri won last year’s Golden Boy award for Europe’s greatest young player under the age of 21.

It was Raphael van der Vaart who took home the trophy in its infancy, but the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have since won it.

Mohammed Kudus was the sole Ghanaian nominee two years ago, and there will be no Ghanaian footballer on 2021 shortlist.

Even while Afena-Gyan, a promising youngster from AS Roma, is on the shortlist this year, the same cannot be said for Stade Rennes’ Kamaldeen, who has been impressive in Ligue 1.

After Roma’s triumph over Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League final in May, Afena-Gyan became the first Ghanaian footballer to win the competition.
