One of the areas where Ghana has made a great impact in sports is the junior level particularly the under 17. A lot of people will recall the 1995 team which had the likes of Awudu Issaka, Stephen Appiah, Christian Atta Gyan, Joe Ansah and others. Ghana has had a lot of honours at the under-17 level winning two world cups in 1991 and 1995 as well as becoming runner ups in 1993 and 1997. Until 2009 when the under-20 team led by captain Dede Ayew won the world cup in Egypt, the Black Starlets had been arguably the best as far as winning a world trophy is concerned.

The Black Starlets are playing the WAFU zone B tournament which is hosted here in Ghana and things do not seem to be going well for the youngsters. The question I am asking, and perhaps others are also asking is: Does Ghana have a future?

I will not be harsh nor conclusive but I am sure I will be able to make my point. Individually, Ghana has talent. Watching the semi-final match between Ghana and Burkina Faso, I saw individual brilliance, I saw talent. Most of these young players are able to hold on unto the ball, dribble and make some good passes. The midfield action was for the Ghanaians. So why did the team lose? Experience.

It is well understood that they will lack experience considering their ages. Again, this team didn’t have enough time to train or prepare because of the MRI situation which removed about 20 players from the original squad. Looking at how these boys are playing, when they have enough time, they will do great things. Will they have enough time? Certainly not! And so, I strongly recommend that the indefatigable technical team double their work and give the young boys the much needed inspiration and motivation. The Football Association should provide the necessary logistics and the various stakeholders should provide them with needed assistance and support.

This team will go far despite the current challenges.
