Ghana became very popular in football when they made their first appearance in the World Cup and even performed better and qualified to the next stage of that tournament. The main and biggest national team in Ghana took part of the 2006 World Cup in Germany and Ghanaians can never forget how well the team performed.
Ghana was placed in the group E. We were in this group with Italy, United States of America and Czech Republic.
The Black Stars of Ghana with the likes of Stephen Are, Osei Kuffour, Mathew Amoah, Asamoah Gyan, Derek Boateng, Richard Kingston, John Mensah, Sulley Muntari, Haminu Draman and the likes represented Ghana in Germany.
At the end of the group stage matches Ghana became second and qualified to the round of 16 of the World Cup. The last game that was played against the United States of America was the biggest game for the Black Stars. Because that win gave them the opportunity to move to the next stage of the tournament.
Ghana lost it’s first game to Italy in a 2-0 score, the game was played on the 12th of June 2006. But the Black Stars comfortably defeated Czech Republic in a 2-0 score on the 16th of June 2006. Goals from both Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari won the game.
And with the last game that qualified the Black Stars to the next stage, Stephen Appiah and Matthew Amoah’s goals did the magic. Ghana won the game in a 2-1 score against United States of America. That game took place on 22nd of June 2006.
On the 27th of June, 2006 the Black Stars of Ghana were sadly eliminated from the 2006 World Cup. Ghana played with Brazil, unfortunately the the Brazilians were better than the Ghanaians. The game ended in a 3-0 score against Ghana.
Ghana have so far qualified to three additional World Cups. With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar the Black Stars of Ghana will make their fourth appearance of the tournament. Ghanaians should be proud, being able to qualify to the World Cup for four times shows our level of development in football.
