Dr Jerry Nboyine, Principal Investigator on the PBR Cowpea project, took time to explain some of the basic protocols to the visiting committee members, the security steps that must be followed to conform to the biosafety rules of the country.
He is a researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-SARI), has revived the controversy over accepting genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Food security, according to him, implies producing enough high-quality food to meet market demand. However he maintains that without biotechnology, countries like Ghana would struggle to feed itself in the face of a rapidly rising global population.
He told a group of journalists in Kumasi on Friday that “organic farming alone cannot feed us.” During a one-day workshop for editors in the Ashanti Region, he presented at the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) in Africa.
The purpose is to provide clarity on Ghana’s GM technology operations and the state of work on a GM product (PBR Cowpea) within the CSIR.
