Health Benefits of Maize –

Maize, also referred to as corn, is a cereal crop. It is a source of nutrition as well as phytochemical compounds. Phytochemicals play an important role in preventing chronic diseases. Resistant starch from maize reduces obesity-related complications. It contains vitamins like vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B5 and B6. These B-vitamins in maize are good for skin, brain and proper digestion.

The presence of vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K together with beta-carotene and selenium helps to improve the function of the thyroid gland and immune system. Potassium is a major nutrient present in maize which has diuretic properties.

Maize helps to keep blood sugar levels in check. Maize, although being high in calories and carbohydrates for instant energy, also comprises tannins and polyphenols: plant chemicals that slow down the digestion process. This helps to lower high blood sugar. Its low digestibility and rich fiber aids in weight loss.
