Ghana Football Receives Lastest Reminder Of Its State

It is a worry when Ghana football keeps on going down the slope without any sense of control or urgency to resolve the situation. When the whole mess began, everyone saw the signs and predicted doom. Like typical leaders in Africa, the “football” people still haven’t accepted the fact that things are falling apart in our football sector.

Few hours ago, Ghana U17 played Nigeria U17 in the WAFU B U/17 Championship. As the host nation for the tournament, the Black Starlets lost disgracefully 2-4 to the away side. The results look familiar as we’ve seen one of our other national teams lose in a similar fashion this same week; Japan thrashed the Black Stars by 4 goals to 1.

The saddest part is we all know the problem, except the leaders of the Ghana Football Association. Signs keep reminding us of the actions we need to take and how quick if the country really values football prowess.

First, the country got its worst humiliation in the recent AFCON. The national male team got just a point out of the possible 9 in a group with the likes of Comoros, Tunisia and Gabon.

Our U20s went to represent in a friendly tournament and got outran by Indonesia U19 aside the other losses. The female teams and, now, U17 male team continue to suffer in the hands of their peers.

Until our leaders throw away their pride and accept the total failure, this latest disgrace at the Cape Coast Stadium won’t certainly be the last. More will follow, the gap between us and fellow countries will widen, and Ghana football would no longer be a powerhouse in Africa.

For club football, we have already accepted our lowered standards and expectations. Same will be for the national teams if we don’t heed to the signs and make bold changes.
