The recent remarks by one seasoned security analyst about the nation’s defense have got many Ghanaians wondering. For some time now, we have heard multiple officers from the national security assuring the good people of Ghana of maximum guard against possible terrorist attacks.
However, Security Analyst, Dr. Ishmael Norman has stated Ghana has a very ineffective intelligence-gathering landscape which terrorists can easily take advantage of. This comment has got citizens thinking again about the current status of the nation’s defense. According to Dr. Ishmael Norman, Ghana is susceptible to terrorist attacks just as the countries currently experiencing it.
He disclosed that many underlying factors can easily trigger terrorist attacks in the country. Dr. Ishmael Norman gave some examples which included poor living conditions of the Ghanaians and corruption.
He said, “As a country, we should not ignore the fact we are just as susceptible to terrorist attacks as Nigeria or Togo or any country in the sub-region, because there are many underlying reasons why a group of bandits or terrorists will attack this state; the economic situation is very bad, there is a lot of corruption at the highest level of government and all of these are annoying, aggravating situations that can make people take the law into their own hands and do bad things,”
Following Sunday’s attack by terrorists on a Catholic church in Ondo state, Nigeria, which led many people dead and others injured, Dr. Ishmael Norman mentioned that Ghana’s security apparatus is not fit for purpose.
He stressed the fact that intelligence-gathering in Ghana is concentrated only in the big cities.
“When you go to the towns, villages, and hinterlands, there’s virtually no intelligence gathering going on. So this is the gap that the terrorist will take advantage of,”
