A lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo following the ongoing NPP internal elections has commented that, spending those huge sums of money on mere internal elections at this time of severe hardship is politically suicidal.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, 6th June 2022, Prof Gyampo wrote;
“Spending those huge sums of money on mere internal elections at this time of austerity and hardship, is politically suicidal.”
He also added that he hope the Special Prosecutor who went after the rejected Juaben MCE nominee, has also taken note of this phenomenon.”
Background
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the morning of Saturday, May 28, 2022, started conducting internal polls in seven regions to elect regional executives.The regions are Greater Accra, Eastern, Upper West, Volta, Oti, Western and Ashanti.
Following the contest there have been several allegations of huge sums of monies being given to candidates to vote for the aspirants. Some people alleged that, Chairmans Wontumi in Ashanti Region spent almost 1trillion cedis to maintain his seat. Other unhappy aspirants has also commented on how their opponents used money to win the elections against them. Prof Gyampo’s comment comes in wake of the above.
