As the Ghana Premier League season draws to a close, let us guard against match fixing.

The Ghana Premier League is gradually drawing to a conclusion. We have 2 matches to end the season. Kotoko has already won the title and Elmina Sharks have already been relegated. As has been observed in previous seasons, when the league is about to end, the competitiveness tends to wane. Clubs have been accused of playing matches of convenience to favour other clubs and prevent them from going on relegation. This season won’t be any different as the speculations have already started mounting.

Hearts of Oak gaffer Samuel Boadu accused his players of playing a match of convenience in their defeat to King Faisal in Kumasi over the weekend. If a coach is making such pronouncements, it doesn’t auger well for our football. He knows what he has seen before making such a pronouncement. The GFA should sit up and ensure the integrity of our league is protected from such occurrences. Our league has been plagued with match-fixing and betting allegations in the past few seasons.

Currently, we don’t have a headline sponsor for the league. Player remuneration is very poor hence forcing some of these players into such acts.
