Galaxy International School, a leading educational institution in Ghana, has held the 17th edition of its annual Science and Makers Fair. The fair is organized to enable learners in the school share ideas and exchange thoughts thereby creating opportunities for them to showcase their achievements while motivating them to continue to enjoy the field of science.
The event which took place on Saturday, May 28, 2022, was on the theme “Imagine, Invent and Inspire”.
Renowned Musician and parent, Okyeame Kwame, who has his two children in the school joined the Vice Chairman of the PTA, Mr. Osama, to officially cut the ribbon to declare the event duly opened.
Some of the learners who exhibited their science works were also available to explain the theories behind their inventions to parents and well-wishers and the general public present. The highlight of it was the robot folding machine which was one of the projects done by the primary section of the school – an absolute innovation.
The fair was also aimed at helping students find Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) inspiring and interesting which is why there is the need for the platform to provide tactile and visible proof of many facts that they read about in books. This helps to increase understanding and help retain information.
In an interview with Ghananewsonline.com.gh, on the sidelines of the event, the Chairperson of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the School, Mrs. Marian Opoku explained that it was refreshing for parents who showed up at the fair, seeing their children make real all the scientist theories and lessons they have been thought.
She said the innovation of making science lessons more practical than bookish was admired by all. She further urged parents to continue to encourage and support their wards with the necessary materials and items to make the scientific ideas and knowledge stick with their wards always.
“Every parent here should support their wards, even if they don’t want to do it, push them a little, when the try their hands at it and its comfortable, it gives them confidence to go further, we as parents are very impressed with all that we have seen here today.”
The Adenta Municipal Coordinator for STEM, Madam Ruth Babatunde, expounds that the Municipal Education Directorate is impressed by the innovation exhibited by the students at the 17th edition of the fair.
She emphasized the readiness of the directorate to collaborate with Galaxy International School to improving STEM education in the Municipality.
Madam Babatunde used the occasion to appeal to the government and other benevolent organizations to support the Ghana Education Service (GES) to also organize Science Fairs in the various public schools to make practical science education in the country.
Some students from three public schools within the Adenta Municipality were also invited to participate in the event. They toured the various stands with enthusiasm while admiring all the science works on display.
Galaxy International School offers the British Curriculum as well as the WASSCE Program. It has been operating in Ghana since 2001 and currently has two campuses; the Primary and Pre-school at East Legon and a Primary and Secondary section at Ashale Botwe.
