The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, or simply Primera División in Spain, La Liga in English-speaking nations, and officially named LaLiga Santander for sponsorship reasons, stylized as LaLiga, is the Spanish football league system’s top professional football division for men.

It is contested by 20 teams and is administered by the Liga Nacional de Futbol Profesional. At the end of each season, the three lowest-placed teams are relegated to the Segunda División and replaced by the top two teams and the play-off winner in that division.

La Liga has had a total of 62 teams compete since its start. Barcelona won the first La Liga title in 1992, while Real Madrid has won the title a record 35 times, the most recent occasion being in the 2021–22 season. Valencia, Atlético Madrid, and Barcelona emerged as the strongest clubs in the 1940s, winning numerous titles.

According to UEFA’s league coefficient rankings, La Liga has been the best league in Europe for each of the seven years from 2013 to 2019 (calculated using data from the previous five seasons) and has led Europe for 22 of the 60 years listed up to 2019, more than any other country.

It has also produced the continent’s top-rated club more times (22) than any other league during that time period, more than double that of second-placed Serie A (Italy), the top club in 10 of the 11 seasons between 2009 and 2019, with either Barcelona or Real Madrid achieving each of these pinnacles.

Most UEFA Champions League titles have been won by La Liga clubs (19), UEFA Europa League (13), UEFA Super Cup (15), and FIFA Club World Cup (7) titles, and its players have won the most Ballon d’Or awards (23), Best FIFA Men’s Player awards, FIFA World Player of the Year (19), and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year awards, UEFA Club Footballer of the Year (19), and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year awards, UEFA Club Footballer of the Year (19).

The competition is held in the traditional double round-robin style. Each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, during the course of a season, which runs from August to May.

A win earns three points, a tie earns one point, and a defeat earns no points. Teams are ranked by total points, with the club with the most points at the end of the season being proclaimed champion.
