Chairman Wontumi Swerves All Odds In Tensed Ashanti Regional Elections

The incumbent Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has retained his seat.

This is the third time, Chairman Wontumi, as he is popularly called is securing the seat. He first won the position in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. Prior to this, he was the constituency chairman for Bosomtwe.

During voting at the NPP delegates conference in Ashanti Regional Regional capital, Kumasi was put on hold for about an hour. This was after some delegates from Obuasi West contested the exemption of their names from the voter album.

Election of constituency executives for some time has been contested by aggrieved party members.

The tension at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, in Kumasi, as the election of regional executives of the NPP was put on hold for the second time.

This follows a move by one of the Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirants, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, to block some members of TESCON from taking part in the election over eligibility claims.

The recent suspension of the exercise is the second today as it was earlier put on hold after members of the party from Obuasi East protested the exclusion of some names from the voters’ register.

But in all the well-known chairman has retained his seat against all odds and predictions from pollsters and elite analysts in the country’s political system.
