Illegal Abortions Are The Major Cause Of High Maternal Mortality Rate In Ghana – Midwife Laments.

The Midwife in charge of the Maternity Ward of the Sampa Government Hospital in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region, Mad Diana Kudjo has expressed worry that most of the maternal mortality in the country occur as a result of illegal abortions. 

Speaking to the correspondent in an interview, Madam Diana explained that some women allegedly venture to terminate pregnancies with a mixture of concoctions that were not prescribed by health practitioners.

Stressing that such alleged unlawful attitudes usually ends the women up into their graves.

She indicated that there are other herbalists or unqualified health workers who have no license but operate secretly to cause abortions that end up in posing negative health effects on women.

The Midwife explained that due to the high maternal mortality associated with abortion in the country, some health practitioners in the health services have been trained to offer comprehensive abortion care to women who for some reasons, decide to terminate their pregnancies to have a safe abortion to safeguard their lives.

Clarifying the purpose of the implementation of comprehensive abortion care being introduced by the Ghana Health Service, Madam Diana Kudjo said that it is a way to help stop illegal abortion that leads to sudden death of women.

She said it also help women with mental disorder who are impregnated by unknown men to terminate the pregnancy with family concerned.

In addition such kind of abortions are also carried out based on doctors advice to the pregnant woman if the pregnancy may cause future health problems to the mother or the unborn child. 

Mad Diana finally advised women especially the youth to desist from illegal abortions because it poses as a health threat to women in the near future.
