Widows across Africa are often kicked out of their homes by their in-laws because national and community laws do not allow them to inherit their husband’s property, or because women do not know if they have rights to the land, campaigners say.
Tradition demands that she “sleeps” with the “cleanser” in a makeshift house made of canvas for three days before officially rebuilding her house. Nowadays many women bring in men to sleep with them after their husband dies and pay them as means of cleansing.
In Uyoma Kagwa a village in Kenya the woman will prepare a very sweet nice meal for the cleanser man before the act in order to separate her away from her dead husband. The women must pay men to sleep with them for 7 days to chase away their dead husband spirit, sperate and cleanse them from their dead husband Alice said.
James a man who sleep with windows said he now use it as a full time job. He charges up to 500 cedis and must sleep with her for 7 days so her late husband’s spirit won’t come for them. After cleansing the woman will be inherited by her in-laws.
