Using Electronic Devices Late at Night Could Affect Sperm Quality

According to a new study, evening exposure to light-emitting digital gadgets is linked to sperm loss and poor sleep quality.

Experts believe that hormone disruption induced by late-night screen use may contribute to the fall in male fertility.

You may want to prevent your husband from bringing his smartphone or tablet into bed the next time he tries to do so – and not only because it destroys the mood. A new study presented at the Virtual SLEEP 2022 meeting identified a link between low sperm quality and evening and late-night exposure to light-emitting digital gadgets.

The study looked at 116 men between the ages of 21 and 59 who were being evaluated at an Israeli reproductive clinic. The males were transported to a lab to have samples of their sperm extracted and examined within an hour after completing out thorough questionnaires regarding their demographic, health, and sleep factors, as well as their daily exposure to digital media devices.

It was discovered that frequent usage of digital gadgets in the evening was linked to lower sperm motility (the capacity to “swim” properly) and sperm concentration. According to the primary investigator, Amit Green, PhD, the head of research and development at the Assuta Medical Center’s Sleep and Fatigue Institute, smartphone use in the evening, tablet use after bedtime, and evening television viewing were all linked to a drop in sperm concentration.

The study also discovered that males who slept for longer periods of time had more sperm total and better sperm motility, whereas those who slept for longer periods of time had less total sperm and a lower proportion of motile sperm.

The findings are especially relevant because, according to a study published in the journal Human Reproduction Update, sperm count and concentration decreased by more than 50% among men in North America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand between 2011 and 2022. Since then, researchers have been trying to figure out what environmental and lifestyle factors might be contributing to this fertility-failure event.

To protect yourself against this danger, limit your usage of electronic gadgets late at night.
