US Report Has Confirmed That Ghana Is In A State Of Rot: Okudzeto Ablakwa Laments

The latest Country Reports on Human Rights Practices released by the United States Department of State a few days ago (specifically April 12, 2022) on Ghana and some 197 other countries contain rather depressing and grim findings of our nation which must be of great worry to all Ghanaians, honorable member Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa sounded this on his Facebook page.

He stated that he hopes this widely considered credible and brutally frank external independent assessment of the state of our country leads us to demand accountability from all our leaders be they in the legislature, judiciary, or executive, and therefore, making us commit as patriotic citizens to a much higher standard than unleashes the full potential of our beloved country.

He revealed that he’s just surprised that since the launch of this globally acclaimed report which is nearing five decades of annual publications, the Ghanaian media has not given any attention to its .

Instead, the over-flogged focus has been on reports predicting who wins the next election more than two years away.

I hope we are not all becoming citizens fixated on just who wins the next election instead of focusing greater attention on winning our governance challenges in between elections.

Electoral victories are worthless if they do not lead to democratic, economic, and social victories.

On a more serious note, it’s quite damning and revealing of the current state of affairs in our country as managed by a so-called human rights lawyer. Nothing in that report is contestable – it all played out under our watch (thanks to readily available cameras and concomitant social media platforms).

Certainly, Ghanaians are glad that as a Member of Parliament, you’ve highlighted this report and its contents. But the key question is: beyond placing excerpts from the report on social media, what are you (as an MP) going to do about it? Will you be tabling this on the floor of Parliament?

What tools are at your disposal (as an MP) to help make this report the agenda for the next day, month, year, or even year? What will the next NDC government do about this wanton abuse of public office and corruption as highlighted by the report?
