Akufo-Addo Blows GHc33M Covid Funds: Stop ‘Disgracing’ Ghana – Nana Akomea Blasts Mahama  | Politics

Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has scolded former President John Dramani Mahama for accusing the Government of Ghana of misappropriating the COVID-19 relief funds.

According to him, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo channelled some ¢33 billion earmarked to offset the pandemic’s grave implications into his 2020 re-election bid.

Mr. Mahama added the said amount which should have brought about economic restoration is yet to be accounted for.

“Ghana’s fate was easy to predict with the cavalier handling of the economy by the current administration. We went into the pandemic without adequate buffers, and have emerged with a terribly battered economy.”

“To make matters worse, the pandemic windfall of over GH¢33 billion which could have cushioned the economy remains unaudited and is believed to have been used largely in the quest to win the 2020 elections at all cost,” Mr Mahama made these allegations while delivering a keynote address at the 24th African Business Conference organized by the Harvard Business School.

But Nana Akomea finds Mr. Mahama’s conduct disgraceful.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ Tuesday morning, Nana Akomea asked the former President to substantiate his allegations with concrete evidence proving the government has misused the monies.

He asked Mr. Mahama how he arrived at his assertion, when in his speech, he admitted that the monies haven’t yet been audited, hence questioning his logic that ¢33 billion have been squandered by the government.

“From his own words, he says the money hasn’t been audited. A spending that hasn’t been audited, how do you come into conclusion that someone has squandered the money? A money that’s not audited, how do you come to the conclusion that we have lost the money or used it for elections? How?” he queried.

To him, it would have made lots of sense if the former President had only requested an audit of the funds, stressing, “that’s what any responsible leader will do”.

But for him to have jumped into conclusions, Nana Akomea cautioned Ex-President Mahama to “desist from making pronouncements like these because he’s made definite pronouncement that someone has squandered the money, used it for elections without providing any evidence . . . A whole former President to be at an international forum and say that, even though we haven’t conducted an audit, in your opinion; we have misappropriated the money and that used it for elections without providing any proof, it’s disgraceful. It doesn’t befit the status of a former President”.
