Liverpool have now gone 14 games “unbeaten” in the Premier League this season

Liverpool have recorded the longest active streak in Europe’s top five leagues this season after beating Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Liverpool beat Everton 2-0 in a tense Merseyside derby on Sunday, closing the gap at the top of the Premier League standings to just one point. Divock Origi came off the bench to make the difference.

The win not only kept Liverpool in the title race, just a point behind leaders Manchester City, but it also dropped Frank Lampard’s Everton into the relegation zone, leaving them in 18th place, two points behind Burnley, who have played one more game.

Juergen Klopp’s side failed to break down Everton in a tense first half at Anfield, despite City opening up a four-point lead over Liverpool at the top after a 5-1 destruction of Watford on Saturday.

In a rowdy derby atmosphere, Everton held their own until Scottish defender Andy Robertson headed his club in front in the 62nd minute with the first shot on target from either side in the contest.

Salah linked up with Origi before floating a cross to Robertson, who headed past Jordan Pickford.

Everton’s hopes of a comeback were dashed as substitute Origi scored five minutes from time to put the game to bed.

The ball bounced to Origi, who headed home from close range after Luis Diaz attempted a bicycle kick volley off a Jordan Henderson cross.

The Belgian has now scored six goals in nine Merseyside Premier League matches after starting on the bench for the most of his tenure at Anfield.

Klopp’s decision to introduce Diaz when the game was still goalless was brilliant.

Liverpool moved to 79 points from 33 games, one point behind City, who must lose if Liverpool are to reclaim the Premier League title.

On Wednesday, Liverpool will host Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, and Robertson was relieved that they had won the derby.
