Some students at Walter Sisulu University campus are threatening to shut down the campus after tampers escalated and emotions flared.
The threats, sent in a notice by student leaders to the campus management, follow a statement by the university’s institutional SRC last week, which referred to a list of 10 programmes it said had been offered though they were not accredited.
These were the advanced diploma in internal auditing; advanced diploma in journalism, master’s in nursing, master’s in medicine (Mmed), Mmed in ophthalmology, Mmed in gynaecology and obstetrics, Mmed in internal medicine, Mmed in anaesthesiology, BSC in zoology, and postgraduate diploma in chemical pathology.
Advanced internal auditing diploma students are among those accommodated at the Butterworth campus.
Butterworth SRC leader Zipho Ngcaba said the students wanted management to outline the implications for an institution that offered unaccredited programmes.
“The mass meeting [on Tuesday] made it clear that until there is a clear direction regarding students registered on on this issue.
“The unfortunate part is that we are talking about people’s futures here.
“We are not going to sit down and watch the institution playing with the future of students.”
Ngcaba said most students who had enrolled for the affected programmes were not funded by NSFAS because they were studying for advanced diplomas, honours and master’s courses, which were mostly self-funded.
