It’s Not Always Sex, Do These Sweet Things For Him And He Will Forever Be Yours

Take him on a weekday lunch date. Show up at his work with a packed lunch, or take him out to eat on his break. Even if you have to bring the kids, it will be a fun distraction from his work worries.

Write him love notes. Love notes on the mirror, in his pocket, in his car, or on his pillow serve the simple purpose of reminding him that he is loved. No need to write a sonnet, just a little note will do.

Buy him a new pillow. His pillow is probably flat and funky. Go ahead and replace it with this down pillow and let him figure it out when he goes to bed. But don’t toss his ancient, flattened one just yet. He may ask for it back.

Tell him he looks nice. You know how good it feels when he tells you you’re looking good, so pass it on. Especially if you know that he has a big meeting or is feeling nervous, giving him that extra boost of confidence can mean a lot.

Tell him you’re thinking of him. Knowing that someone is thinking about you is like a virtual hug. It can turn your whole day around.

Listen to him talk about work. Don’t just nod or scroll through your phone, but really listen. Ask questions. Take mental notes.

Then follow up later. Ask him how work is going, but be specific about the projects he said he was working on or the big meeting he was dreading (because you were listening, right?).

Tell him he is a good dad. It’s the best compliment. All parents crave it. Tell him he’s a good dad and tell him specifically why.

Be proud of him. He is patient with the kids. He has been working extra hard. Whatever it is, tell him you’re proud of him for it. Being in our partner’s corner, cheering them on, is important.

Bring his favorite ice cream home from the store. Buy it, don’t eat it, then break it out after bedtime. And order this yummy toppings kit that comes complete with chocolate and caramel sauce, too.

Kiss him at unexpected times. Goodbyes, greetings, and good nights all constitute ritual kisses. Pop in for one when he isn’t expecting it to inject a little bit of love into the day.

Apologize. Even if you’re apologizing for something that happened long ago, but you know you were wrong, just tell him you’re sorry. If it is on your mind, chances are that he remembers too.

Thank him. If he has done something special, thank him. If he hasn’t, thank him for doing the same old things he always does. A little appreciation goes a long way and a world’s coolest dad mug would definitely do the trick.

Talk him up in front of guests. When you have friends or family over, make a point of slipping some of your husband’s accomplishments into the conversation. He might blush, but it will boost his ego and make him feel loved.

Say something nice about his family. In-laws can be tricky. Whatever your situation is with yours, your husband probably cares about his family deeply. Find something kind to say about the people that raised the man you love and he will love you for it.

Ignore your phone. Next time you and your husband are having a conversation or doing any activity together, try actively ignoring your phone. Those dings and rings are annoying and grabbing for your phone when you hear one feels more like an impulse than a choice. Ignoring the distraction and focusing on your husband will make him feel important.

Buy him silly socks. Socks covered in bananas are probably not something that your husband would typically buy for himself. Slip them in his drawer with the rest of his socks and I bet they become his favorites, though.

Put a pack of gum in his console. It isn’t a big enough deal that you will want to watch his reaction to finding it, but you will know it was a nice surprise for him to find in his car.

Clean his computer screen. It is just one of those things that always needs to be done but rarely is. He may not even notice that you did it. Small gestures of kindness with no expectations are the best gifts, though.

Plan a date. Dates don’t have to be a big deal. Take a walk for a quick refresh or connect over a bowl of ice cream after bed time. Have burgers delivered after the kids are asleep and watch a movie (this list is great for ideas). The point is to connect with just the two of you, not go broke on a sitter and food.

Take His Advice. If you asked where you should put the lamp and he made a suggestion, go ahead and take it. Or maybe he gave you advice on how to handle an issue at work. Your husband will feel valued when he hears that you followed through with his suggestion.

Write affirmations on the mirror. “I am strong. I am a good father. I work hard.” He might laugh, but he will still read the words and know that you believe them. Hopefully they will sink in and boost his confidence. (Hint, white board markers work well for this!)

Let him be home alone. When was the last time your husband had the house all to himself? Give him an afternoon to absorb the peace and quiet while you take the kids out. There is a good chance that he will miss you all and be glad when you come home.

Throw him a half birthday. An unbirthday works well, too. The point of a birthday party is to celebrate the existence of someone special to you. Or is it an excuse to eat cake? Whatever it is, he will feel special.

Plug in his phone. If you see it, plug it in. It is such a simple thing, but that unexpectedly full charge will be a pleasant little surprise.

Replace his toothbrush with a fresh one. This is another one where you’re unlikely to get any acknowledgement or praise for your kind thought (even if it is a snazzy electric toothbrush!). But it is about nice things for the guy you love, not nice things that you’re going to get credit for.

Be excited to see him. When you or he gets home, let it be the best part of your day. Throw down your jacket and run to him.

Bake cookies. Bake the kind he likes and just give him the whole batch (if you aren’t up for making them from scratch, there’s pre-made dough for that). Health be damned, cookies are worth it.

Find ways to touch him. Mind out of the gutter for a minute: touch is such an intimate show of affection. A back scratch or a foot massage says it all without you saying anything.

Help him when he is in a hurry. Lay out his clothes or set out his shoes and bag. Comb his hair while he brushes his teeth (ok, maybe that’s too far). Just help him get out the door when he is running late instead of rolling your eyes like you want to.

Hold his hand. Holding hands is the epitome of a sweet gesture. You probably did it all the time when you were dating, but can you remember the last time you strolled hand-in-hand? Let me tell you, it feels much better than the sticky, wriggly hands you usually hold.
