The Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency and minority member on the foreign affairs committee in parliament, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has today declared “war” on the E-Levy which is set to be implemented on 1st May, 2002, this he posted on his Facebook wall as below;
“We have today successfully filed an application at the Supreme Court to injunct the implementation of the obnoxious E-Levy pending the determination of our substantive case.
Hearing is fixed for 4th May, 2022.Â
The Govt/GRA must now suspend its 1st May plans.Â
The E-Levy war is on!”
Background
The parliament of Ghana on 29 th March 2022 passed the most deliberate E levy into bill in the absence of minority group. The bill was further assented by the president, H. E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo in a law and it’s set to be implemented in the month of May.
Describing their actions in not taking part in the voting, the minority caucus described it as a “strategic walk out”.
With that strategic walk out, the minority caucus asserts that, the majority fall short of the required 138 quorum under article 104(1) of the 1992 Constitution and as affirmed by the Supreme Court in the recent Justice Abdulai case that enables them to carry out voting to take decision in parliament citing the conspicuous absence of the member of Parliament for Dormi Kwabenya, Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo.
