‘I’m not sure yet; club focus for now’ – Tariq Lamptey on playing for Black Stars » ™

Tariq Lamptey, an England-born right-back, has talked publicly for the first time about the idea of playing for Ghana.

Lamptey is one of many foreign-born players on the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) radar as the Black Stars side prepares for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Lamptey was born in London but has Ghanaian ancestors and is thus qualified to play for Ghana despite having never earned a senior England cap.

When asked about the potential of representing the Black Stars, the Brighton & Hove Albion right-back said that he is unsure at the moment.

“I’m not sure yet. I’ve to just keep focusing on my club football. Take a game by game and then we’ll see,” he said, as quoted by Ghanasoccernet.

The 21-year-old is a product of Chelsea’s academy but departed in the summer of 2020 to join Brighton in pursuit of playing time.

Lamptey is one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated full-backs, having made 25 appearances in the English top tier this season.
