People are calling for Zimbabweans’ working permits to not be renewed because they claim that foreigners are occupying jobs that were supposed to be occupied by local citizens. It has been a very big war since the human rights commission has been threatening to take the matter to court to contest that ZEP should be renewed. According to the reports, there are over 180 000 Zimbabwean exemption permits that have to be renewed. This means that there are over 180 000 jobs that are occupied by foreigners in South Africa.
The minister of home affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has been trying everything to fight to ensure that those permits don’t get renewed. It seems like it’s a losing battle because he is receiving too much pressure from Zimbabwe as well as the South African human rights commission that he should renew those permits. Just a few weeks ago, the human rights commission took this matter to court, saying that ZEP must be renewed. Many people were shocked at how the South African human rights commission is a body advocating for foreigners instead of local citizens.
Just when we thought the issue was lying low, South Africans are being warned that there will be bad effects on humanitarians if ZEP is not renewed. Activists are warning South Africa that it should renew the ZEP because there will be a significant humanitarian crisis. They went on to say if ZEP is not renewed, over 500 000 children will be affected because they have settled down here in Mzanzi and going back to suffer in Zimbabwe will be a trauma and will negatively affect their minds.
After this was posted on social media, Mzanzi was not pleased nor convinced. They are still calling for the government to not renew this permit. Some even said South Africa is facing an unemployment crisis on its own, so we should stop worrying about foreigners and focus on ourselves for a moment. See some comments below.
Opinion:
It is not South Africa’s problem that Zimbabwe is suffering. Mzanzi is suffering. We are not bothering any of them, so Zimbabweans should do the same. Not renewing these permits will cause a humanitarian crisis for Zimbabweans, not South Africans. The duty of the government is to put South Africans first and stop prioritizing foreigners.
