A white South African lady said that she is shocked to see that many South Africans are of the habit of hanging the South African national flag upside down. She lamented that he never thought that even the police, Gauteng police precisely, would also make that mistake. The lady went to Twitter to register her displeasure, saying that it is a mark of disrespect to South Africa to hang the flag upside down. She noted that this coming from the police is the more reason it is disdainful. Furthermore, she wrote, “Absolutely shocking that @SAPoliceService in Gauteng can host an event showcasing our national flag UPSIDE DOWN, get it RIGHT, have some respect. It has been 28 years”. The lady also shared some pictures of other government establishments where the flag was also hanged upside down. She shared about eight (8) of such pictures.
Many people who reacted to her statement said that they are not surprised because, the nation is “walking upside down” as a result of the ANC leadership. They noted that hanging the flag upside down is not an insult but a reality because many things are going wrong in the country now. A South African youth and social media user who responded to the article said, “A flag upside down is the symbol for a country distressed. I think it’s a very Apt display from SAPS. Nothing wrong with it… An upside-down flag is usually a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. It’s not wrong…”. Another person added that we must make it a point of duty to teach the upcoming generations how properly to hang the flag and which direction is facing up. He again added,” … when a country is distressed you hang the flag upside down. Maybe not a mistake, but a subtle admission that they are failing against the overpowering crime and corruption. Please, they are signaling this stress when a country is distressed it flies the flag upside-down
