After sustaining a gunshot wound in an alleged gang-related shooting in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, a two-year-old kid is fighting for his life in Groote Schuur Hospital.
The boy was shot on Paulsberg Road on Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon, Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint, according to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi.
“When police arrived, they were told that the victim had been taken to a nearby hospital for medical care after suffering a gunshot wound.
“Three unknown armed guys fired gunshots at persons sitting outside their home, hurting the youngster,” according to sources.
He went on to say that no arrests had been made, and that police were looking into an attempted murder case.
Charles Esau, a Bishop Lavis ward councillor, claimed he paid the family a visit on Sunday morning.
Please do not harm innocent children if there are adult rivalries, our children must be protected at all times by the community and our many levels of government. Unlicensed firearms have no place on the streets, and I urge authorities to take immediate action.
Everyone, according to Esau, must fight gangsterism in their neighborhoods.
“Our courts must intervene with heavier sentences to protect our fearful people,” he stated.
Graham Lindhorst, chair of the Bishop Lavis Community Police Forum (CPF), stated the shooting was gang-related.
“As members of the CPF, we strongly condemn this shooting. It is intolerable that men in our communities continue to harm our children. We demand that the police make themselves more visible in the neighborhood “he stated
Gangsterism is dangerous on its own and has been proven to be fatal on numerous occasions, which is why it is strongly discouraged and condemned in our communities. However, there must be a way for communities to come together to combat gangsterism. Parents should take action and discipline their children if they participate in these harmful behaviors.
It is distressing to see a young and innocent youngster caught in the crossfire of these gangs, for the sake of this young life, justice must prevail.
