A distraught northern Kwazulu-natal mother will be attending court tomorrow to face the teacher who is alleged to have raped her daughter.
The teacher, at a prominent Dundee school, is alleged to have sexually assaulted the 14-year-old girl in school last Friday.
A letter to parents, teachers and pupils from the school governing body (SGB) said: “The SGB regrets to inform you about the traumatic incident that took place at the school on Friday. We do not have enough words to express our shock and utter dismay. We are sad to state that a departmental educator allegedly sexually assaulted a learner during school time on Friday. The parents were informed immediately of this incident. The learner was assisted and supported by the school’s psychologist and taken to the Dundee Hospital Crisis Centre.”
The letter further stated that the teacher was removed from the school by police and a criminal charge was registered. It confirmed that the matter was reported to the provincial Education Department for a full investigation.
It stated that the reaction to the incident “was violent and extreme, and the principal also came under attack”.
This week, the girl’s angry mother rubbished the SGB’S claims that the parents were informed immediately.
“It was only when my husband went to fetch my daughter from school that he found out. He could not find her outside school and when he tried calling her she did not answer. He tried again and a lady answered saying he should come inside as there had been an incident. When my husband went in the lady told him our daughter was assaulted. At that time he did not know our daughter was raped. My husband then asked a family friend who works at the school to take him to the boy. My husband lost it when he saw it was a teacher.
“The school never contacted us when the incident happened or even thereafter.
“The school did not even arrange counselling for my child. We had to take her to a child psychiatrist. She is normally a very bubbly, outspoken and talkative child, but is now withdrawn and doesn’t want to go out. She hasn’t been eating. The hardest part is she is on antiretrovirals which is making her more sick,” she said.
The mother said she and her husband were very protective of their three daughters.
“We are old-fashioned parents. We don’t allow our daughters to go for sleepovers. We take them to school and madressa, and fetch them. We are so guarded with our children and for this to happen. We now ask ourselves where did we drop the ball.
“This school is supposed to be one of the best schools. And you get this. The teacher is supposed to be protecting the children,” she said.
The mother said she would definitely be in court.
“I’m not going to hide from him,” she said.
Colonel Thembeka Mbele, police spokesperson, confirmed that a 36-year-old suspect was arrested for raping a 14-year-old female.
