One beautiful thing about us South Africans is that we genuinely love our celebrities. We celebrate them and when one of them dies, we deeply feel the pain. The country has lost a number of celebrities in a very short space of time but no death has touched fans like the recent tragic death of Riky Rick. It is evident that the iconic legend was adored by many. “Riky ‘Rick’ Makhado’s death has hit many people, even those who weren’t close to him or huge fans of his music, because he was so much more than just a massively popular musician.
The country is in mourning! In Sandton, two men were spotted installing a big billboard with a picture of the late Riky Rick. This has gotten Mzansi so overwhelmed, with some saying they have never seen Riky’s pictures as random. “This man had an incredible face to look at and it’s just WOW,” a Twitter user said. Maybe if we had regarded Riky as the icon that he was, hung his pictures on billboards while he was still alive, he would have known how special he was…maybe he’d still be around, some say.
Beautiful pictures of the muso are currently trending on social media. His photos are definitely going to transcend generations. I suspect Riky Rick pictures are gonna live through generations to come like Tupac. He was such a gorgeous man and so photogenic. People were apparently crying last night at the club when there was a Riky Rick moment. That guy literally touched everyone’s life. Whether physically, emotionally, through his music, or any way. He was an angel on earth. May his beautiful soul rest in peace.
We don’t know why is it that after someone has passed, it is then that we realize the impact they made in our lives. This is what hit me the hardest about Ricky’s passing, I don’t know for sure but being shown the love and appreciation while he was still alive, he would have truly seen and known how much we cared for him. But it’s too late now.
Riky Rick was larger than life. Even African Bank took time to pay a special tribute to him. “It is with profound shock and deep sadness that we learned of Riky Rick’s passing. Our hearts are broken,” African Bank wrote on Twitter. The bank added that in a brief time, Riky Rick had become part of their family and touched many lives. “He will be sorely missed, our country is poorer without him. We salute an inspirational cultural icon.”
On Sunday, eNCA will also pay a special tribute to Riky Rick at 10am on DStv403 with Masego Rahlaga, guest DJs and artists. Riky Rick will be laid to rest on Tuesday, 1 March at a private ceremony in Johannesburg. The family planned an intimate gathering for his send-off and it will be live-streamed.
